Day 240: Settling in Seattle

Luke and I just on the train.
Luke and I just on the train.

As I was typing this out, I started to realize that this started to become way too detailed in the sense that I’m listing almost every single thing that I’ve done for the day. I suppose I have too much of a habit trying to log everything that I’ve done in order to retain that memory for future reference. I did the same with almost every other pre-convention/convention post that I would type up.

In short, I’m only warning you that there will be a lot of words and it will probably be boring considering that I try to remember every single thing that I’ve done. Though I suppose if you enjoy it, then power to you. I’ll try to evenly distribute the pictures along each of these posts. So without further ado, hit the “read more” link and enjoy!

Luke woke up around 6am. I know this because he gave me a call in order to wake me up. Shortly after we had exchanged a few short conversations, we began to prepare for our journey into Seattle and into my friend Kenny’s apartment. We packed the essentials and I brought the cosplay costumes that I would wear to PAX. Fortunately for Luke, he had brought a duffel bag with wheels on it. Unfortunately for me, all I had was the shoulder strap duffel bag and it was heavy. Since Kenny’s apartment was recently obtained, it did not possess nearly any furnishings; hence the reason we had to bring sleeping bags.

Once we were prepared, we then went to the train station where we soon boarded the train to go to Seattle. Luke thought it was pretty neat considering that he’s only gone on subways, but never a train.

As we approached Seattle, I started messaging Kenny alerting him of our upcoming arrival. He sent a message back saying that he would wait at the train station to wait for us. As a precaution, I had asked for his address prior to Luke’s arrival at WA. Thus I told him that it would not be absolutely necessary for him to wait for us if he did not wish to wait at the station.

Upon our arrival to the King Street Station, we exited out of the boarding area to scout around and locate Kenny. Since he could not be found, I used my phone to find his address and look up directions to his apartment. I also decided to call him as we started walking to see where he was and if he could guide us. Less than even half a minute of calling him, we saw him walking in our direction. Thanks to him coming our way, we were able to get to his apartment fairly easily.

After just less than ten minutes of walking, we were able to reach Kenny’s apartment. It was just odd since Kenny took us to an alley behind the apartment. Apparently it was easier for him to enter his apartment that way. In any case, I’ve been to his apartment building before; however it turns out that he just got a new apartment all to himself for a much lower price. The only visible structural difference that the room was in comparison to his previous one was that it was mirrored. As expected though, it was barely furnished. There was only a couch and a turntable as furnishings. Luke and I were fine with that though; we only needed to use his room to sleep in. Though there were many things that he was lacking. After a short discussion with Kenny, he agreed that he needed a few things and we came up with a small shopping list we would need to go out shopping for.

Shortly after we had settled in, we left to go visit a few places. Breakfast was in order so we went to this small cafe that Kenny frequently went to. It was very delicious. No pictures of food cause I’m impatient and I often eat it before I remember to take pictures of it. We went straight to Uwajimaya afterwards considering it’s often a great place to show to visitors of Seattle. Though it’s really the Kunikuya Book Store people are more often interested in. This was the case with Luke. The three of us spent quite a deal of time within the store browsing the products. Luke appeared as though nothing was capturing his immediate attention until he passed by a “Tales of” variety of art books. His eyes glinted like that of a predator who had just found his prey. Since Luke was taking his time, I ended up making a few purchases myself. What Luke ended up purchasing was quite a bit. He definitely felt the impact after the transaction was complete.

It was shortly after we left Uwajimaya (and on our way to Daiso which was just outside) that I realized that I had forgotten two important things: the letter I was supposed to deliver to Markiplier for my friend and my camera. So after we bought some essential tools for Kenny at Daiso (such as a cooking knife, some forks and plates, etc), we went right back to his apartment.

A few minutes after arriving at the apartment, Luke and I left to go to the Lunchbox Laboratory where we would meet Ruby and Phil, our old online friends. I had the chance to meet them last year when they went to PAX but this would be the first time Luke will have met them in person. It took only a short while for Ruby and Phil to arrive after we had which was fine. Of course, I had told Luke to order a Dork Burger and everyone else as well. Since Ruby and Phil did want to try a variety of other foods (understandably), they decided to share their food while at least getting one Dork Burger. When the burgers finally arrived, I watched everyone in anticipation to see how they liked the burger. As expected, Luke was impressed and liked it a lot. Needless to say, I inhaled the burger after confirming everyone else enjoyed it as much as I did.

After lunch was over and our farewells were said, Luke and I immediately left to take the train right back home to pick up the two things I had forgotten. It was going to be cutting it really close so we had to jog a bit to the train and we made barely made it… or we thought it was going to be a small margin. Turns out that the train would have waited a bit anyway before going back anyway so the run wasn’t necessary.

Still, it would be cutting it close to go back to my house, pick up a few things and drive right back to catch the very last train to Seattle. As safely and carefully as I could, I drove quickly back home, picked up what was needed, and drove right back to the station. As we were getting the stuff out of the car, we heard the train. With that, we tried to run as fast as we could to the train but our efforts were in vain. It was almost like a cliche you’d see in cartoons or movies: we were so close that Luke started to knock on the doors of the train that had just closed in desperation that we’d be able to get on. Fortunately there were still buses that we could take back home.

When we finally got to Kenny’s apartment, we just sat around to relax a bit. We had been moving almost the entire day doing things here and there. There was still a little bit of time before we decided to go to GameWorks. Luckily for us, GameWorks has a special on Thursdays where for 10 dollars, you can have unlimited play on all the arcades. We invited Kenny to go with us to which we both agreed that we would pay 5 dollars each for Kenny as our way of paying back for him letting us stay at his place.

Around 8:30, we left to go to GameWorks. As expected, it was PACKED. Nevertheless, we all had a good time playing arcades here and there. It was weird though because I actually met my old childhood friend, Edward. I was freaking out because it had been such a long time since I had seen him. It wasn’t like it’s been over a decade (since my family did visit his before), but it definitely has been long enough for me to forget exactly when. In any case, we also finally got to meet Julia (aka Chikari), our old guildie from Onigiri. We all had fun and we were able to try out most of the arcade machines that we wanted to. After a short while though, the three of us gathered once more and decided that it was time to head home and get some rest. Luke and I had been busy all day and we were tired. Today would mark the eve before the big reveal.

Though some of you may have already seen it on Facebook but whatever. In any case, I’ll write more about it soon!

This was considered "clean" in comparison to when a little before we would leave to go back home on Monday.
